Subject: discussion item

….. discuss scheduling a workshop to discuss best practices and school district plans for new teacher support, as well as teacher recruitment and retention.

We should be provided with and discuss the following information

  1. The  study that was done in the past few years by PBAU or FAU that looked at our teacher retention data. It was especially poor for teachers of color. I do not know if they made recommendations for improvement..
  2. Data on teacher salaries, benefits, recruitment incentives and bonuses for advanced degrees and performance compared to the cost of living in various school districts.
  3. Data on the placement of School of Education graduates from state schools with a focus on Florida A & M University, Bethune Cookman College, Palm Beach Atlantic University and Florida Atlantic University. We should also see any available data on why they choose the school districts that they choose.
  4.  Teacher turnover by school and any notations that explain it e.g. the school was zero-based.
  5. Exit interview data
  6. Input from CTA and  teachers on how to improve the new teacher support program.
  7.  Best practice recommendations for new teacher support including any from the Council of Great City Schools.
